The factory is being shut down

This will be the second last update on the wonderful world of Clarence and his magical box. Little children are growing up too fast these days and are becoming less interested in eating candy, and if that is so then there is no need for Candy Coated Creations.

The story of Clarence is to much of a complex tale and would require weeks among weeks more planning and work in order to make it taste as delicious as it should. It would not feel right to bring out a product if the recipe had not yet been perfected and so it is my unfortunate duty to announce the closure of this factory.

One more update will come shortly which will be the link to a new and wonderful fable. A much darker tale from an even darker time, keep your eyes bigger than you belly for this one, and as round as the full moon.

Sugar overload

All this candy has given my brain a sugar overdose! The story of my animation has come to me, I'm going to start typing out the basic story. I really dont want to spoil it or give anything away but when I get into the stages of concept art and animatics I shall reveal a little taste of the candy!

Doodle bug

I thought I would scan in some doodles of my main character Clarence. He is a very curious boy (which naturally makes him the worst person to have Pandora's box) and loves coffee. Strange and unexplainable things often seem to happen to Clarence due to his unaturally bad luck!

I made a tiny comic strip out of three pictures I drew so I thought I'd post that up too! Any sketches and doodles will be posted up as larger versions in the Candy Recipes section, enjoy!

Eat your heart out Pandora

This little piece of candy is the first (and poorly drawn) sketch of the protagonist of my animation. His name from his very birth has been Clarence and I see no reason why that should ever change!

This short and stubby style of character is quite common in the cartoon world but I think I have gained my chosen animation style from three main inspirations.

1: The Legend Of Zelda: The Windwaker

This is a video game released in 2003 for the Nintendo Gamecube and I love its cell shaded style. This is probably the first thing I thought of when I was set an animation project! Here is a video of some of the gameplay just so you can get a feel of it!

2: Invader Zim

Invader Zim was a cartoon that first aired on Nickelodeon in 2001. It was cancelled after 2 seasons and 27 episodes as the creators kept slipping in images that didnt follow Nickelodeon viewing guidlines (blood and gore). The show is set on earth where everything is just strange and illogical. So no only does Invader Zim inspire my drawing style but also the atmosphere I want to give my animation, here is a short video below showing the art syle.

3: Dad 'n Me

Dad 'n Me is a flash game created in 2005 by programmer Tom Fulp and is a follow up game to his related game Chainsaw The Children. The game is set in a suburban neighbourhood where you play the son of a huge purple maniac. You run around beating up children and adults alike throwing, punching and stabbing your way to the end boss. This game itself was made on flash and the art style of the characters is what really wanted me to add it to this list. Here is a video to show the gameplay and of course if you want to play the two games just follow either of the links above.

Eye candy

Here is a great animation named The Heart Collector I found on Youtube, I love the colour and the rough sketchy style! And just so I can keep all these inspirations in one little place I'll keep all of them in a link to the right of my blog posts labelled Eye Candy! Enjoy!

Blogging from the iPhone

This may be a difficult task as it may take more time to add my retarded big and colourful writing! But hey... when an idea strikes you may not always be at the seat of a computer so this phone may just be my lifeline!
There is no bloody iPhone app for blogger, if there was I'm sure this could be a lot easier! I was actually thinking of using Twitter to write up any brainstorms (yes I said brainstorms.. fuck political correctness! It's politeness and consideration gone mad!) but if I can't display it clearly on my blog then I'll have to think of something else!
Either way I will be buying a blank book and blessing it as the Fallacy Funhouse Bible (It'll be like any other bible, just with less hypocrisies and won't cause wars, murder and terrorist acts in the name of it). This bible will be the recipe book to all my fantastical and delicious ideas. More to come soon you greedy fat children!

Pick your posion

The style and method of animation is really important when it comes down to how much effort you want to put into it and how you want your story to look. The style that will be used for Pandora's Box will be drawn (either by hand or digitally by graphics tablet). This is works in my favour as I really want to give it a zainy cartoon style.

Pro: Nothing can limit the madness that will surely ensue
Con: This may be finished on the 11th of forever, takes way to much time!

So although my creativity will knows no bounds this could take a very long and excruciating time to complete, so I will need to find ways to not cut corners as such but to help make sure I finish before Year one of university!
Here is a short animation I found on Youtube, it is a simple and handrawn student project that was made to display walking animations. It's cartoony nature and simplicity inspires my piece of candy!

The opening of Pandora's Box

This blog was cooked up for the purpose of documenting every little step towards the end result of an animation. An animation that will be based on a myth that features a twist, and it will take most of its recipe from the Greek myth Pandora's Box. The basic story goes like this:

"In Greek mythology, Pandora was the first woman on earth. Zeus ordered Hephaestus, the god of craftsmanship, to create her and he did, using water and earth. The gods endowed her with many talents; Aphrodite gave her beauty, Apollo music, Hermes persuasion, and so forth. Hence her name: Pandora, "all-gifted".
When Prometheus stole fire from heaven, Zeus took vengeance by presenting Pandora to Epimetheus, Prometheus' brother. With her, Pandora had a jar which she was not to open under any circumstance. Impelled by her natural curiosity, Pandora opened the box-jar, and all evil contained escaped and spread over the earth. She hastened to close the lid, but the whole contents of the jar had escaped, except for one thing which lay at the bottom, which was Hope."

This is a great story to animate for several reasons... First of all you can do alot with it, its short and doesn't have a massive amount of backstory and therefore you can really twist it mix it up to make something new and interesting. Secondly it would be a great story to make as you can draw all sorts of wonderful things flying out of that magical box! It's just a huge fantasy that won't limit the creativity of the ideas.

Finally on this everlasting gobstopper of a post I will provide a link to the Myths and Legends website that have a more detailed and easy on the eye take on the myth itself. Click Here
